In a first a “Queer Katta” is being organised in Mumbai. Queer which is an umbrella term for the LGBTQ community, will dedicate few hours to discuss the issues concerning the LGBTQ community at the Katta. Not limiting only to discussions, the katta will also host a lot of people who wish to recite poems, do mimicry and showcase their talents. It will be a regular feature to start on Sunday, at Maheshwari Udyan, and will be held across Mumbai but only at public places. It is also open for allies of the LGBTQ community. Meanwhile, the Gay community is eagerly awaiting the final orders on the Secrion 377 petition in the Supreme Court.
QKnit is starting the event titled as “Queer Katta” on the occasion of the International Youth Day.
Sumeet Pawar from QKnit said, “The idea behind a katta is to provide people a safe space where young people can express their gender, sexuality, feelings, and other aspects of the LGBTQIA community. It is also a space to interact and share their hobbies like poetry, singing, mimicry, etc.”
On any Sunday, the Maheshwari Udyan located at Matunga has more than 50-60 people. It is a very famous meeting point not only for people from the Queer community but otherwise too.
However, the organisers have decided not to limit the event to Maheshwari Udyan only. According to Pawar, every katta will be at a different place, from South Mumbai to Western suburbs and even Thane. The aim, they say, is to reach out to as many people as they can via this initiative.
On Sunday, when the event starts, there will be a discussion on the LGBTQ community and then, it will be followed by poetry recitations. People can also use this platform to discuss problems faced by the LGBTQ community.
The reason behind hosting this at a public place like the Marine Drive or Carter Road is to address a larger section of the population.
